Women’s Basketball Team Seeks to Improve in 2016-17 Season
MAYS LANDING – In the 2016-17 season, The Atlantic Cape Community College women’s basketball team, the Buccaneers, will seek to improve upon last season’s 11-9 record. The Bucs, who compete in NJCAA Region XIX, will open the season Nov. 5 at Passaic County Community College.
The Bucs started the 2015-16 season with seven straight wins and a spot in the NJCAA national rankings, but went 4-9 for the remainder of the season and eventually lost in the first round of the Region XIX playoffs.
Head Coach Harold Harris, who has taken the Bucs to the playoffs three times in six seasons, is optimistic that this squad will qualify and advance in the NJCAA Region XIX playoffs. He will be assisted by Deborah Tanksley, former Atlantic Cape player, for her second season as assistant coach.
The team will rely on returning players Alejandra Serrano, forward from Atlantic City, who averaged 11 points per game and 10.6 rebounds per game in the 2015-16 season; and guard Alyscia Johnson (from Mainland) who will be counted on to provide leadership as one of the team’s top 3-point threats.
The Bucs welcome a group of excellent new players, led by Olvia Ayres (from Oakcrest) who will play point guard and control the team’s offense and who also is an excellent 3-point shooter. She averaged 8 points per game for Oakcrest last season. Freshman center Courtney Hartman (from ACIT) and forward Gianna Figueroa (from Hammonton) will round out the Bucs’ starting five. Hartman has a strong inside game, scoring 17 points versus RCBC in the team’s first scrimmage; and Figueroa is an excellent ball-handler and defensive specialist. In addition, Amanda Mazzeo (from Hammonton) and Claudia Ceasar (from Cedar Creek) are versatile players who can play both forward and guard.
