Atlantic Cape Graduate uses Prior Learning Assessment to Obtain Credit Towards a College Degree

October 23, 2017

Atlantic Cape Community College offers college credit for college-level learning obtained outside of the traditional classroom through a prior learning assessment. Individuals with professional licenses, certifications, work experience and military experience can request an evaluation of their experience from Atlantic Cape and receive up to 25 credits toward an associate in applied science degree in Technical Studies.

Robert Winder of Estell Manor is one of the first students to take advantage of the PLA credits for his work experience. His NJ State Electrical Contractors License, NJ State S-1 Wastewater Treatment Facility license, and NJ State C-1 Collection System license qualified him for the maximum of 25 life credits towards his associate in applied science degree in Technical Studies. He received his degree in May 2016 at 45 years old.

“At the time of my schooling I was the Monitoring and Control Systems Coordinator with the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority and have since been promoted to Operations Coordinator with my new degree being a major part of the qualifications,” Winder said.

“Atlantic Cape’s PLA program continues to provide our constituents the opportunity to earn college credits for their experiential learning. For many, this is the gateway into higher education, and for most, it is the most efficient pathway to a college degree,” stated Dr. Otto Hernandez, vice president of Academic Affairs at Atlantic Cape.
