Perth Amboy, NJ is the northern most ‘Jersey Shore’ town, positioned at the intersection of the Raritan Bay and the Arthur Kill straight, across from Staten Island. The Industrial Revolution started, in part, along the waterfront of Perth Amboy. While some of the 20th Century industries remain in the city, much of the waterfront is comprised of abandoned manufacturing operations, including metals processing/smelting, industrial coatings, and steel manufacturing. In 2007, the city became a state-designated Brownfields Development Area, BDA, coordinating state and local resources in the clean-up and re-use of the contaminated sites.

Remediating sites along an industrial waterfront present unique challenges, which will be discussed in this presentation. Recreational and commercial interests must be considered in a manner that allows for the productive re-use of land for 21st -Century warehousing and manufacturing, while maintain and enhancing the recreational and environmental quality of the Raritan Bay. Flood resiliency is an important factor that will be discussed, with specific examples provided by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Perth Amboy took close to a direct hit with storm surge that impacted the city in many ways.
