Hello Atlantic Cape Faculty and Staff,
Atlantic Cape Community College changed the direction of my life forever and for good.
I am Terri Lynn Hamby, a Cape May County resident, a mother of three girls, a long-time Atlantic Cape employee, an alumna and a donor to the Create Opportunity Campaign. I am writing to you today to tell you why I decided to give to the campaign.
After the birth of my first daughter, I knew I wanted to pursue a college degree. My friends encouraged me to try Atlantic Cape. I did not have the money to go to college, but I was eligible for financial aid and with that help I began a long and fruitful journey.
I started taking classes at what was then Atlantic Community College in 1991 and, through the work study program, secured a job as a lab assistant. It was in this position that I discovered my love of science and laboratory work. In 2006, I was promoted to the full-time position of Lab Manager and was recently promoted to Assistant Director of Science Labs. It took a while, but I completed my AS in Math and Science. My personal life had its share of ups and downs as well. The journey included a divorce, a new marriage and the addition of two more beautiful girls to my family.
My love of science inspired me to continue my education and obtain a second AS in Biology from Atlantic Cape, a BS in Math and Natural science from Thomas Edison State College and an MS in Geoscience from Mississippi State University.
My original life plan never included staying at Atlantic Cape this long, but I am very glad my plans changed because Atlantic Cape provided me with the financial assistance and flexibility to obtain a great education, grow into a strong independent woman (that was able to leave an abusive marriage), purchase a home, provide for my family, and be a role model for my girls as well as a mentor to Atlantic Cape students. I believe participating in the Create Opportunity Campaign is just a small way to give back to the school that gave me so much.
My family and I have secured the naming rights to a learning lobby in the new STEM building, and I cannot wait to show my girls their names on the plaque outside their room.
You may make a donation or a pledge by using the Employee Donation/Pledge Form. Click here to print your copy of the form. Please return your completed form to the Atlantic Cape Foundation.
