Understanding Diversity in the Classroom

Diversity has become an important concept and a goal for schools and for teachers. While plenty of material is available on how to adapt to classroom diversity, this immersion workshop helps teachers to understand when and why America changed from a nation with strict limits on immigration to one that embraces diversity. The goal of this workshop is to add a social and historical dimension to the diversity debate.

Bringing Global Issues into the Classroom

After World War II, America reversed course abandoning a long history of isolation from the rest of the world. Today, America is a global power leading an increasingly interdependent world. This workshop prepares educators to bring global issues (such as human rights) into the classroom and to help prepare students to understand when and why America became a global power. After the shocking terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, this seminar will also analyze the countervailing forces resisting American power and influence.

Teaching Bioethics Using Ethical Dilemmas in the Classroom

Educational research has shown that students relate better to content presented in the form of moral and ethical dilemmas rather than as facts. The concept of dilemmas implies that in a democratic society there is no one answer--only the interplay of various interests. This seminar in bioethics utilizes this unique approach to introduce faculty to role-playing activities they can use to enhance the learning experience for their students.

Write a Book in a Week

(for teachers of Grades 10-12, but is also open to the public)

Teachers! Spark the imagination of your students! Enhance their writing skills. And ask yourself these questions: Ever wanted to put pen to paper and write a book? Do you know what kind of book it would be? A murder mystery, perhaps, or a romance novel or even a children’s book? Remember Harry Potter is one of the most famous children’s characters ever. This two part workshop helps teachers (and members of the public) organize their ideas and then write, write and write! (15 days/30 hours)

Instructor: April Kihlstrom is the author of 31 published romance novels and has developed and hosted nationally-renowned writing workshops including Write A Book In A Week and 10/20/30 Minutes To Write. She has made presentations about these workshops at many national writers’ conferences.
