Medical Billing and Coding

Prerequisites: High school diploma or GED, have a command of English grammar and punctuation. No healthcare or medical office work experience is required.

This 180-hour course prepares you for an entry-level position doing medical billing or coding in a medical office setting. The course is divided into two modules. The first 90-hour module includes anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, HIPAA, and medical law and ethics. You will learn about the skeletal and muscular structures in the human body, the meanings of common basic words and phrases in the medical field. HIPAA regulations and privacy and confidentiality awareness will also be covered.

The second 90 hour module addresses Medical Billing and CPT-4/ICD-9 Coding. You will gain knowledge of the basic concepts and procedures necessary to perform tasks involved in insurance and billing, and reviewing and filing of insurance claim forms. An introduction to basic coding definitions and distinctions between ICD9-CM and CPT4 coding manuals is also provided.

Students completing all course requirements will be eligible to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Billing and Coding Specialist certification examination. The cost of this exam is included in the program. Textbooks required at additional cost.
