Confidentiality of Student Records

Individual student records are regarded as confidential. The right of each student to inspect and review the official College files relating to that individual will not be abridged. Access to a student's records by unauthorized persons is denied.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) affords students certain rights with respect to their educational records. These rights are as follows:

  • The right to inspect and review education records
  • The right to seek and amend education records
  • The right to consent to disclosure of his or her public records
  • The right to file a complaint against any institution for the alleged violation of the FERPA rights

FERPA permits Atlantic Cape to release directory information about students, such as, but not limited to:

  • Name
  • Hometown
  • Classification (freshman or sophomore)
  • Degrees Awarded
  • Honors
  • Awards
  • Weight/Height of Athlete
  • Sports Participation

Non-directory information is NEVER released without the student's written permission.

A student may request that his/her non-directory information be released by filling out the Enrollment Verification Release Form available in the Enrollment Services Office.
