March 9 Information Session about NJ STARS Planned

February 24, 2010

Atlantic Cape Community College will host an information session for high school students eligible for free Atlantic Cape tuition under the NJ STARS scholarship program. The event is scheduled for 6 p.m., Tuesday, March 9, in Atlantic Cape's Walter Edge Theater, 5100 Black Horse Pike, Mays Landing.

Jacob Farbman, director of communications for the New Jersey Council of County Colleges, will discuss the benefits of the NJ STARS program. There will be a panel discussion with representatives from Atlantic Cape, four-year colleges and financial aid.

Established by the state in 2004, NJ STARS-Student Tuition Assistance Reward Scholarship-provides high school students graduating in the top 15 percent of their class with free tuition at their local community college. Students from Atlantic and Cape May counties who meet all criteria will have up to two years from the date of high school graduation to enroll and begin using the scholarship at Atlantic Cape.

Students must first apply for all need-based federal and merit-based state financial aid grants. After that, NJ STARS will cover the remaining balance of tuition and fees, although certain lab, course and program fees may not be covered. Tuition and fees for Atlantic Cape's Academy of Culinary Arts are also included in the program.

Atlantic Cape's transfer agreements with four-year colleges and universities ensure a seamless transition to a four-year bachelor's degree program. Students can save $20,000 to $80,000 on the cost of a four-year school by spending their first two years at Atlantic Cape.
