Student to Have Essay Published in English Textbook
April 17, 2009
An essay written by Atlantic Cape Community College student Diana Valtierra, 19, has been chosen to appear in the next edition of a popular English textbook.
It all began when Valtierra's teacher, ACCC Assistant Professor of English Jay Peterson, was asked to review the upcoming 9th edition of the textbook "Evergreen" by Susan Fawcett, which is the standard text for the college's Reading/Writing I classes.
"This is something that professors are typically asked by publishers to do," Peterson said. "After I submitted my review, Cengage Learning (the company that publishes the textbook) inquired if I had any exemplary student essays that might be published as model essays in the new edition."
Peterson recommended Valtierra's essay titled "Quinceañera," about the traditional coming-of-age celebration held for Hispanic girls when they turn 15. This is the only student essay Peterson submitted for consideration.
The first-year nursing major lives in Pleasantville. She graduated from Atlantic City High School in 2008. Valtierra is a Mexican-American who was born in California.
In addition to having her essay published, she will be paid for her work. The textbook containing her essay will be published in fall 2009.
