ACCC Trustees Approve Purchases, New Hires and Capital Project Expenses
July 26, 2005Preparing for the start of fall classes and the opening of the college’s new Cape May County campus, Atlantic Cape Community College’s Board of Trustees approved new faculty, science equipment and landscaping and heard an update on the campus construction.
Board Approves Contracts and Purchases:
--Science supplies, total of five vendors, science department FY’06 operational budget, $37,010.
--Reimbursement as lead agency under an adult education grant to Atlantic County Institute of Technology, $37,855.
--Ornamental landscaping and sprinkler system, Cape May County campus, Chapter 12 and Leaves for Learning funding, Tom’s Landscaping Contractors, Laureldale, $118,185.
Transfer Approved to Support $1.5 Million in Capital Projects
At the recommendation of the Long-range Planning Committee, the board approved the transfer of $1.5 million from the FY’04 year-end unrestricted fund balance to pay for a host of capital projects.
The resolution included a prioritized list of projects from the college’s Facilities Master Plan with an immediate or high priority. They will be funded in priority order.
In Personnel Matters:
The board approved these appointments:
--Michael Bolicki, Beesley’s Point, assistant professor of educational psychology, effective Sept. 6.
--Christopher Cruz Cullari, Aberdeen, assistant professor of developmental English, effective Sept. 6.
--Linda Dolan, Egg Harbor Township, acting associate dean, continuing education operations, effective Aug. 8.
--Vickie Melograno, North Cape May, assistant professor of English, effective Sept. 6.
--Christina Miles, West Deptford, assistant professor of developmental mathematics, effective Sept. 6.
--Kristi Neal, Medford, assistant professor, English as a second language, effective Sept. 6.
--Augustine Nigro, Evesham, assistant professor, history and government, effective Sept. 6.
--Christopher Perillo, Delran, assistant professor, paralegal studies and criminal justice, effective Sept. 6. --Robert Townsend, Downingtown, Pa., assistant director, facilities management operations, effective July 27.
--Carol Drea, Glassboro, was promoted to director, corporate training, continuing education, from assistant director, retroactive to July 4.
The board accepted these resignations: Julie Gonzalez, secretary, facilities management, retroactive to July 5, and Rachel Wettstein, program coordinator, continuing education, effective Aug. 19.
In Trustee News:
The board welcomed new member David A. Evans, an educator for 21 years in Galloway Township, who was appointed by Acting Governor Richard Codey to a term that will expire Nov. 1, 2008.
Chairperson Brian Lefke also announced that Lynn Kramer, whose state-appointed term to the board had recently ended, had been named by Atlantic County to a three-year term on the board, ending Nov. 1, 2008.
Trustee Jeffree Fauntleroy submitted his resignation, effective immediately. His term was to expire Nov. 1, 2007.
In the President’s Report:
Dr. Peter Mora, provided the following information in the president’s report:
--Dr. Mora reported that the Middle States accreditation team would visit the college March 26-29, 2006, with a preliminary visit scheduled for Nov. 8.
--The Cape May County campus has achieved official “branch campus” status, the president said. He thanked Bobby Royal, acting dean of the Worthington Atlantic City Center and community affairs, for his work and that of those on his team.
--Terry Sampson, executive director, business services, gave a report on the Cape May County campus. Construction is 98% complete with work continuing on railings, blinds, millwork and hardwood floors. The college hopes to receive the temporary certificate of occupancy on July 27 and begin commissioning the building on Aug. 7. It is anticipated the lawns will be seeded and ornamental landscaping installed before the grand opening Aug. 24.
--Carmen Royal, dean of students, gave an enrollment report. Summer totals are up 5% for heads and 8% for credits, with online credits up almost 20% over last year. Fall enrollments are running ahead of the same time last year, with heads up 4% and credits up nearly 5%. Kramer asked for a five-year enrollment projection for Cape May as well as fixed and annual costs for operating the new building. Dr. Mora said the college would prepare that information.
--Pat Owens, acting dean of continuing education and resource development, gave a presentation on national recognition received recently by two continuing education projects. The Allied Health Advancement program was selected from more than 100 applicants nationwide to receive a first place Recognition of Excellence Award from the U.S. Dept. of Labor, Employment and Training Administration. The Bilingual Culinary Program, operated at the ACA, was profiled as a Faces of Success. Both honors came at the Workforce Innovations 2005 Conference July 11-13 in Philadelphia.
In Other Business:
--Treasurer Nicholas Talvacchia reviewed, and the board accepted, the draft summary financial report for June 30, 2005.
--Dr. Albert Monillas, ACCC Foundation liaison, reported on several upcoming events. Those who gave to the Foundation’s End of Year Appeal have been invited to a reception in the college library Aug. 16. The Leaves for Learning Donor Wall will be unveiled Aug. 24 as part of the Grand Opening ceremony. Trustees were asked to mark their calendars for the Foundation’s Gala Celebration Sept. 30 at the new Cape May County campus.
--Trustee Eric Reynolds, gave the Minority Affairs Committee report. Through the support of businesses and individuals, Kids College scholarships were awarded to 58 students from Atlantic City and Pleasantville.
--Talvacchia, for the audit committee, reported that the attestation report, expected to be released at the July meeting, had been held up until the August meeting to give the full board time to review it.
--Kramer recommended a time limit be established for those speaking before the board. She also asked for an update on her request to have trustees annually sign a code of ethics. Lefke said he was seeking input from trustees and working on both matters.
Board Authorizes the College to Apply for These Grants:
--Prentice Hall Education Partnership Program, July 1, 2005-June 30, 2006, $20,000.
--N.J. Dept. of Human Services and Department of State Support
Services for Post-TANF Population grant, Oct. 1-2005-Sept. 30, 2006, up to $90,000.
--U.S. Dept. of Labor Employment and Training Administration, Limited English Proficiency and Hispanic Worker Initiative Grant, Jan. 1, 2006-Dec. 31, 2007, up to $1,000,000.
