Atlantic Cape Community College and Cumberland County College Will Compete in Boardwalk Basketball Classic

The Atlantic Cape Community College Buccaneers and the Cumberland County College Dukes will compete Dec. 27 and 28 in the Boardwalk Basketball Classic’s first College Showcase Series at the Wildwoods Convention Center. Both colleges compete in NJCAA Region XIX and are members of the Garden State Athletic Conference.
The Boardwalk Basketball Classic, the nation’s largest holiday coed basketball tournament, features high school boys and girls basketball teams competing in a six-day tournament to raise scholarship funds for graduating seniors from the host schools, Wildwood and Wildwood Catholic high schools.
On Tuesday, Dec. 27, the Cumberland and Atlantic Cape women’s teams will play at 8:15 p.m. The Dukes, who won the Region 19 Championship two years ago, are 3-10 this season. Destiny Esquilin, of Vineland, leads the team with a 16 PPG average, followed by Lynn Brown, from Buena Regional, who has a 10.2 PPG average. Coach James Boney is in his sixth season.
The Buccaneers are 2-7 to start this season. Forward Allie Serrano, of Atlantic City, averages 16.7 PPG and 13 rebounds per game; while center Courtney Hartman, from Atlantic County Institute of Technology, averages 14.6 PPG. Harold Harris is in his eighth season as head coach.
The men’s game will be held at 8:15 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 28. The Bucs will be led by freshman Miles Carter, a 6-3 shooting guard of Rosenhayn, who was named NJCAA player of the week in early December. Carter averages 19.6 PPG. Brian Nolan, of Atlantic City, leads the team in assists, and JaVonn Parrish, of Ocean City, averages 15 PPG and nine rebounds per game. Atlantic Cape is coached by Marvin Graham, who led the Bucs to a 13-12 record and a Region 19 playoff spot in his first season as head coach.
The Dukes are 7-6 and have won six of their last eight games. Cumberland’s top scorers are Kyle Philo, of Shalick, with 18.1 PPG and Haashim Wallace, of Vineland, with 16.6 PPG. Coach Will Wareham, now in his second season, led the Dukes to the playoffs last year.
