Academy of Culinary Arts Graduate and Former ‘Cake Wars’ Contestant Shares Gravity-Defying Cake Demonstration with Students

Students in Chef Educator Annmarie Chelius’ Advanced Decorative Concepts class at the Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College got a firsthand look at the techniques that go into making a gravity-defying cake, Monday, Sept. 26.
Academy graduate Jaime LaPinta of Toms River brought one of her finished gravity-defying cakes to the class for display, and also recreated one for the students, which took about two hours. Techniques she showed the students included airbrushing food coloring, chocolate molding and piping methods. LaPinta recently was a contestant on the Food Network’s “Cake Wars” television series, where her team placed second.
