New Jersey Secretary of Higher Education To Speak at Atlantic Cape Commencement May 22

Rochelle Hendricks, New Jersey’s first secretary of higher education, will deliver the keynote address to Atlantic Cape Community College’s class of 2014 at the school’s 47th annual commencement, 11 a.m., Thursday, May 22.

Hendricks has over 20 years experience working on education issues in the Garden State and was appointed by Gov. Chris Christie to the Cabinet-level post in May 2011. Prior to that appointment, she served as acting commissioner of New Jersey’s Department of Education.

She has served in the Department of Education in other capacities as well, including working as director of the Professional Development Office, manager of the Office of Policy and Planning in the Administration Division, assistant to the deputy education commissioner, and director of the Office of Vocational-Technical, Career and Innovative programs. 

Before joining the staff of the Department of Education, Hendricks worked for Princeton University for over 15 years facilitating a variety of duties. Highlights are serving as the interim director of the Women’s Program and as director of the Educational Opportunities Program.

She began her career as a teacher at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School before joining the Department of Education in 1987.
