GEAR UP Information Session Planned for April 10
March 26, 2013
Atlantic Cape Community College will hold a GEAR UP information and registration session for students interested in signing up for the free program, 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, April 10, at the Charles D. Worthington Atlantic City Campus, 1535 Bacharach Blvd., room 204.
Atlantic Cape is one of seven colleges in New Jersey to offer GEAR UP, a grant program funded by the U.S. Department of Education providing academic support, college preparation and activities to middle and high school students.
GEAR UP strives to raise academic awareness, increase academic aspirations and strengthen academic achievement among low income students. By coupling student services like free tutoring, mentoring and career counseling with parental involvement initiatives, GEAR UP educates students and families about the value of higher education, the college enrollment process and financial aid.
Eligible students in six schools (Pleasantville Middle School, Pleasantville High School, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Complex, Sovereign Avenue School, Uptown Complex and Atlantic City High School) can register with GEAR UP to participate in the Academic Year Program and the Summer Academy. Once registered with the program, students are followed throughout their primary and secondary school years and through the first year of college enrollment.
Students can choose from the following summer academies:
--Music Academy (Grades 6 & 7)
--Forensic Academy (Grades 8, 9 & 10)
--Arts Academy (Grades 6 & 7)
--Media Arts/Communications Academy (Grades 8, 9 & 10)
