Atlantic Cape Raises $1.5 Million Toward $2.5 Million Campaign Goal; Major Gifts from Zaberer Foundation, Local Donors Kick Off Public Phase

Atlantic Cape Community College and the Atlantic Cape Foundation announced today they have raised $1.5 million of the $2.5 million goal in the school’s first capital campaign.
At a news conference, Dr. Peter Mora, president, kicked-off the “public phase” of “Create Opportunity: The Capital & Scholarship Campaign for Atlantic Cape Community College,” by announcing the receipt of five major gifts totaling $235,000. The campaign’s first public phase gifts, when added to the $1.265 million raised in the “quiet phase,” bring the amount donated so far to $1.5 million, 60 percent of the campaign goal.
“Atlantic Cape must maintain its commitment to accessibility and affordability. Faced with the reality of today’s economy, we are seeking new funding streams to support our operations and help our students pay for tuition,” Dr. Mora said. “Building on the Foundation’s successful events-based fundraising, this capital campaign places a new focus on raising philanthropic support from private sources, specifically from individuals through major gifts.”
The Capital and Scholarship Campaign has two initiatives:
· Increase college-based financial assistance by enhancing the scholarship endowment.
· Secure funding to purchase furnishings and scientific equipment for the new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) facility to be built on the Mays Landing campus.
Gifts announced today include:
· Dr. Sandra Harmon Weiss and her husband, Dr. Richard Weiss, of Avalon, have established a $15,000 endowed scholarship, in memory of Sandra’s sister, Marilyn Rhoads Miller. Harmon is a medical doctor; a member of the Atlantic Cape Foundation Board of Directors; chair of the Scholarship Committee for the American Association of University Women, Cape May County branch; and serves as a mentor to students in the Atlantic Cape PASS program at Atlantic Cape’s Cape May County Campus. Her husband is a retired dentist.
· Charles Robinson of Brigantine, a friend and supporter of Atlantic Cape and the Academy of Culinary Arts, donated $20,000 to establish the Neide Robinson Memorial Scholarship—an endowed scholarship for culinary students—in memory of his wife. On Sept.14, the ACA will host a scholarship dedication ceremony in memory of Mrs. Robinson in the college’s organic herb garden.
· Ocean City Home Bank has pledged $25,000 to the campaign for scholarships. The bank will pay $5,000 each year for five years. Founded in 1887, Ocean City Home Bank offers support for a variety of civic and charitable organizations. The bank makes financial contributions to area events as a way to help the community and is an active sponsor of area golf tournaments, school sports programs, community festivals and non-profit organization fundraisers.
· An anonymous donor has contributed $75,000 to the previously established Baucus & Company Scholarship Fund. Over the past three years, an anonymous donor has supported the Baucus & Company Scholarship, creating opportunity for Cape May County students majoring in Business Administration.
· The Frances M. Zaberer Foundation will donate its $100,000 endowment to the Atlantic Cape Community College Foundation and entrust Atlantic Cape to continue its legacy of inspiring culinary excellence. Started by Charles Holliday in memory of his grandmother, the Frances M. Zaberer Foundation has provided more than $50,000 in culinary scholarships to Atlantic Cape culinary students since 1986. The funds generated from the endowment will support ACA students through the following scholarship programs: Charles Zaberer Scholarship, Carole Ercolani Zaberer Scholarship, Edwin Zaberer Scholarship for Academic Excellence and the Anthony A. Ercolani Scholarship.
Atlantic Cape alumna Mary Beth Zenyuk ’09, of Woodbine, a recipient of the Marjorie Ward Leaders Scholarship, discussed how the scholarship changed her life. Zenyuk recently graduated from The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in school psychology at Rowan University.
Atlantic Cape’s Capital & Scholarship Campaign began in September 2009 and is expected to conclude in March 2013. The campaign offers investors recognition opportunities, and invites donors to support Atlantic Cape students through the creation of scholarship programs.

Atlantic Cape established the Foundation in 1978 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit charity to build a broad base of financial support for its programs and services. Foundation members are drawn from local industry and small businesses and represent a broad cross-section of active leaders in the community. The Foundation has raised more than $2.5 million for scholarships, Foundation operations and to enhance academic programs and the campus environment. Annually, the Foundation provides nearly $200,000 for institutional scholarships, grants and emergency help.
